Why Memorize Scripture?

One of the things that I’ve begun doing as I read and study God’s word is memorize scripture.  When I was younger, it was something we did at bible study that I hated. Everyone one of us knew – “Jesus wept”. We all also learned the Our Father prayer.

Now, however, I have found that God”s word is full of wisdom and comfort. It is also full of many promises that I, as a child of God, claim for myself.  Scripture is also full of wise instruction designed to help us along our way.

John 15:7  says – If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you can ask for what you will and it will be done for you.

This verse tells me that one of the benefits of learning scripture is that God will hear my prayers. I regularly include scripture when I pray to God.

I often turn to God”s word during seasons of trouble. The Psalms are an excellent place to look for encouragement and praises. Psalm 23 & Psalm 91 are considered Psalms for protective covering and are good to be read or prayed at such times.

I also love search the scriptures for positive affirmations. God says – we are fearfully and wonderfully made, we are His special treasure, and that there is no condemnation for those of us in Christ Jesus.  It’s good to know what God’s word says about us as opposed to what others are saying. God’s words are true and he does not lie.

Last but not least, every so often, I use my bible concordance or online resources such as Bible Gateway to search for key words and phrases to see what the bible tells me about these topics.  I’ve done topics searches on fear, healing, deliverance, and the tongue to name a few.

Once I find a verse I really like, I write it down and memorize it. When I need to, I go back to these words of comfort and encouragement.

My favorite verse of all time is Romans 8:28 and it says – All things work together for the good of those who love God, those who are called according to his purpose.  This verse has brought me comfort during some extremely difficult times.

I challenge you to find such a verse to bring you comfort daily encouragement.
