On day 25 of our Faith Dare journey, the dare was to Use Our Tongues to Bless and Build Up Others. The scripture tells us there is life and death in the power of the tongue. As brothers and sisters in Christ we should be using our tongues to speak life into others not to bring them down or harm them.
In the book of James 3:8-9 it says: But no man can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
If our tongues are evil and wicked and cannot be tamed by us, how do we speak to others in love? We must go to God in prayer and ask him to help us. Only He can give us the power, through his Holy Spirit to control ourselves. One of the fruits of that Spirit is self control.
We have also been commanded to love our neighbors as we do ourselves Mark 12:31. How can we love them if we don’t speak to them in a kind and loving manner? We must learn to live together in harmony and build each other up. We are all parts of one body, the Church.
Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. Ephs 4:1-6
The next time you speak with someone, show them the grace and love that God showers on us daily. Encourage them, be helpful, and lift them up. Find ways to speak kindly, look for good and not evil, smile, for we know that whatever we give will be given to us. As a man sows, so shall he reap. Let’s go about God’s business and sow life and love where ever we go.
